Join us for the latest installment of our “News & Brews” series, where we sit down for coffee and conversation with trailblazing journalists shaping today’s media landscape. This time, we’re thrilled to welcome Cerise Castle, a Los Angeles-based journalist celebrated for her fearless reporting on civil rights, criminal justice, arts & culture, and human interest stories.
Cerise Castle is best known for authoring the first-ever comprehensive history of deputy gangs within the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a groundbreaking investigation that led to the podcast series “A Tradition of Violence.”Her work has earned her numerous accolades, including the 2022 International Women in Media Foundation’s Courage Award, the American Journalism Online Award for the Best Use of Public Records, and the American Mosaic Journalism Prize.
In addition to her work as a producer and host for VICE News Tonight, NPR, and Marketplace, Castle has produced podcasts for Audible, iHeartMedia, and Wondery. Her reporting and commentary have been featured in outlets such as ABC, The Los Angeles Times, Salon, and Vanity Fair. She was also a 2024 Poynter Fellow at Yale University.
