Join us for a special installment of our “News & Brews” series, where we engage in thoughtful conversations with impactful journalists over coffee. This session brings together Phil Lewis and Caleb Pugh to discuss the ethical considerations of covering the Eaton Fire recovery in the Black Altadena community.

Phil Lewis is a journalist from Detroit, Michigan, and currently serves as the Deputy Editor at HuffPost. His journalism career began in 2015 as an editorial fellow for The Huffington Post in Washington, DC, and he has since become a prominent voice in digital journalism. Lewis previously worked as a staff writer and programming editor at the millennial-focused outlet Mic and is the President of the Washington Association of Black Journalists.

Caleb Pugh is a Los Angeles-based Freelance Writer and On-Air Talent, dedicated to storytelling across various niches through writing, producing, and hosting his podcast Underground Creative. Known for his thoughtful interviews and keen insight into creative industries, Pugh has developed expertise in interviewing musicians, fashion designers, producers, entrepreneurs, and political figures. His work reflects a deep passion for amplifying underrepresented voices and building connections across industries.

Together, Lewis and Pugh will discuss strategies for ethically and sensitively covering the Eaton Fire’s impact on the Black Altadena community, including how to navigate storytelling with integrity, center the voices of those most affected, and engage in solutions-oriented reporting.
